Armada Technologies Air Lubrication System
Maritime transport is essential for the world’s economy with over 90% of global trade being carried by sea. Shipping is a complex system, made up of various actors and fragile interdependencies. Pressure is mounting for shipping to decarbonise and transition to more sustainable operating practises. Armada’s commercially attractive technology will help vessel operators meet the often-competing objectives of regulatory compliance, reduced operating cost, and enhance environmental stewardship.
The energy required to power shipping for one year would be enough to power New York City for over 60 years.
By some estimates, the international shipping industry produces as much carbon dioxide (CO2) as Germany.
SEAS OF CHANGE
Incoming environmental regulation such as EEXI and CII require ships to become ever more energy efficient and reduce environmental impact. A ‘need being the mother of invention’ ethos has meant that the supply of innovative technological solutions has lagged behind industry demand. Stakeholders across the maritime ecosystem now demand a clean transport network and to stay competitive owners now seek high performance, commercially viable and readily deployable efficiency solutions.
A VERY REAL PROBLEM
Shipping is the backbone of the global economy; transporting approximately 90% of the world’s trade volume.
As the industry’s development continues, it generates increasing carbon emissions - By some estimates, Shipping emits as much CO2 as Germany.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandates a reduction in Shipping carbon intensity by at least 40% by 2030, and 70% by 2050, compared with 2008 levels.
Fragile License to operate
Extraordinary societal pressure on ship owners/ charterers to take drastic action to curtail their owned emissions.
Limited deployment of viable energy efficiency technology at scale: current solutions are unreliable, low performing, prohibitively expensive, and/ or work effectively across only a truncated segment of the vessels full operating spectrum.
A VERY REAL SOLUTION
Air lubrication is recognised as the optimal means of driving energy efficiency in shipping operations, and once optimised is readily deployable across the entirety of the world's merchant fleet. Armada is currently developing the world’s first naturally aspirated air lubrication system. In contrast to existing solutions, Armada’s patented, award-winning system operates in a semi-passive mode, and enables discreet control of system output with the complete decoupling of system lubricity from ship speed – in doing so Armada can deliver optimal boundary layer aeration at any prevailing operating condition. In doing so, Armada will help drive the clean maritime agenda both further and faster.
